Flamenco Vivo with Laura—An introduction to flamenco rhythm and movement is a two-day workshop available via ZOOM on consecutive Saturdays – August 8 and 15 – at 2:00 PM. The classes are appropriate for students ages 12 and older, their parents AND other adults.
(Note: The Zoom meeting is limited to the first 100 attendees.)
The program is available through a collaborative partnership with Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana – one of America’s premier flamenco companies with home bases in New York City and Durham – The Clayton Center, the North Carolina Arts Council, and the Clayton Cultural Arts Foundation.

The class format is 30 minutes of movement followed by a 10-minute Q and A. Keep in mind that the workshops are sequential, with Day 2 building on Day 1. However, those people joining only day 2 can also feel comfortable participating.

Laura Peralta began her musical studies at the age of 8, attending the Manhattan School of Music and later the Johns Hopkins University. She began her dance studies with Omayra Amaya in New York City at the age of 23. Laura has performed in the NYC area and toured throughout the U.S. with companies including Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana, A Palo Seco Flamenco, Soledad Barrio y Noche Flamenca, Pasión y Arte, Juan Siddi Flamenco Theatre, at venues like BAM Fisher Hall, Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Outside Festival and the Joyce Theater. She was a scholarship recipient for the School at Jacob’s Pillow and has had original work selected for festivals. Laura currently teaches, performs and continues her flamenco studies in New York City and Seville, Spain.
Jonathan Parker and his band are featured on The Clayton Center’s Wednesday, August 19, Facebook livestream concert. Jonathan, who hails from Johnston County, is a country artist who has recorded several albums. His most recent album, “Broken Hearts & Broken Bones,” was released in May.

For the past decade, kora player and singer Diali Cissokho has called North Carolina home. Hailing from a long line of Senegalese musicians and storytellers known as griots, Cissokho made the transatlantic move to Pittsboro with his wife almost 10 years ago.
Shortly after he settled in North Carolina, Diali formed the band Kaira Ba with the aid of native Piedmont musicians John Westmoreland, Jonathan Henderson, Austin McCal, and Will Ridenour. Together, they blend the traditions and rhythms of West African music with subtle timbres of the American South.
While comparison has been drawn to other notable Senegalese griots, such as Baaba Maal or Youssou N’Dour, the fusion of polyrhythmic percussion, plucky electric guitars, and sprinkles of pedal steel and electric organs makes for a much more individualistic, accessible sound. The Clayton Center presents North Carolina locals 2Digh4 to the stage as part of our Livestream Concert Series on Wednesday, September 2, at 7:00 PM.
2Digh4 (pronounced Two Die Four) is a country/rock/pop band founded by brothers Landon and Aubrey Digh from Fuquay-Varina.
The brothers write original songs, and on July 12 of 2019, the band released its very first single, North Carolina. The song debuted on the radio on July 28, 2019, on 94.7 WQDR and also on 98.5 The Big Dawg.

Seward Johnson Atelier
and world-renowned composer/musician Christian Tamburr announce their collaboration Sounds For Sculpture “The Awakening.” Enjoy this one-of-a-kind performance by the Christian Tamburr Quintet on Wednesday, September 9, at 7:00 PM.
This dynamic live performance features an all-star ensemble of Grammy and Tony recognized musicians. The quintet performs Tamburr’s original musical compositions inspired by 10 of Seward Johnson’s breathtaking sculptures.
Sounds For Sculpture premiered at Lincoln Center in New York City in August 2019. It was well-received and played to sold-out crowds and rave reviews. Its musical influences are rooted in modern and traditional jazz, South American rhythms, and contemporary vocals.

ABOUT CHRISTIAN TAMBURR
Christian Tamburr is an internationally renowned vibraphonist, pianist, composer and arranger with touring and performances in over 67 countries around the world. Downbeat magazine recognized him with the “Outstanding Solo Jazz Performance” award, and he is a five-time “Critics Choice Top Rising Star” award recipient on vibraphone.
Christian is the current musical director, pianist and arranger for 2018 double Grammy nominee Clint Holmes Soundtrack On Tour and The Modern Warrior. In addition to his public performances, Christian travels as CEO and lead facilitator of Sonic Leadership LLC, bringing unique musically inspired presentations on leadership and training to corporate teams around the globe.
The multi-talented John Brown brings his quartet to The Clayton Center stage on Wednesday, September 16. The performance is part of our ongoing Facebook Live concert series, which begins at 7:00 PM.
A successful bassist, composer, educator and actor, John currently serves as Vice Provost for the Arts at Duke University. He has a long history of performance excellence. At the age of 13, he began performing with the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra. He was playing Principal Bass with that orchestra and performing with the Florence Symphony in South Carolina while still in high school.
John has performed in the United States and abroad with artists that include Wynton Marsalis, Ellis Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis, Elvin Jones, Nnenna Freelon, Diahann Carroll, Rosemary Clooney, Nell Carter, Lou Donaldson, Slide Hampton, Nicholas Payton, Frank Foster, Larry Coryell, Cedar Walton, Fred Wesley and Mark Whitfield.
He also has a Grammy nomination for his performance and co-writing on Nnenna Freelon’s 1996 Concord release, Shaking Free. His extensive experience includes performances at notable venues like Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Blue Note, Blues Alley, and the Hollywood Bowl and at major jazz festivals like the Playboy Jazz Festival, the JVC Jazz Festival, the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Free Jazz Festival (Brazil) and Jazz e Vienne (France).

And they’re back….The Clayton Center welcomes Project 63 back to the stage on Wednesday, September 23. This Alt Americana band made their debut on our Facebook livestream series back on the first of July. They have since released their newest album, “Lost In The Light.”

2020 Piedmont Laureate Tamara Kissane and colleague Aurelia Belfield of Artist Soapbox commissioned 11 North Carolina playwrights to craft short audio scenes based on the prompt “Declaration of Love.”
Though the resulting original pieces span the gamut in style, setting, and content, they all spark emotions and unleash imagination through story and sound.
Recorded remotely by local actors, the finished, sound designed scenes will be released to the public in podcast form later this year. But Tamara will present six of the 11 audio pieces in a special appearance on The Clayton Center’s Facebook Livestream on Tuesday, September 29, at 7:00 PM.
This special event, presented by The Clayton Center in collaboration with the North Carolina Arts Council and the Clayton Cultural Arts Foundation, will feature the following scenes:
Love is All I Know (Robin Carmon Marshall) and Happy Anniversary (Lakeisha Coffey), performed live by actors Lakeisha Coffey and Thaddaeus Edwards.
Video performances of Game On (Tamara Kissane) and Constellation (Aurelia Belfield) by actors Aurelia Belfield, Kyma Lassiter, AhDream Smith, and Lamont Reed.
Audio performances of Always (Thaddaeus Edwards) and The Gifts We Leave (Michael Ivory) by Trevor Johnson and Sai Graham and Yolanda Rabun (the same Yolanda Rabun who performed on our livestream with her band back in August).
During the event Tamara and Aurelia, co-producers and directors of the scenes, will discuss the project and their love for the audio drama art form.

sents the first gospel performance of our Livestream Concert series, featuring New Covenant from just up the road in Wendell.
New Covenant brings to the stage a blend of Contemporary Christian, praise and worship, and southern gospel music, and they are even known to take a nostalgic journey with the music of the 50s and 60s.
The members of New Covenant are Larry Johnson, Sherry Gammon, Joanna King, Jeremy Gamble, and Angela Millenbaugh. Each member has the versatility of singing various vocal parts, and together they bring a casual yet spirited performance to a variety of musical venues. Roots run deep and wide as the individual members originate everywhere from Central and Eastern North Carolina, to Central Alabama, Texas and across the “pond” in England.

The Clayton Center’s Wednesday night livestream concert series continues on October 7 with the music of William Seymour.
William is a singer-songwriter based out of Greenville. His sound can be described as a mix of blues, soul and Americana. His influences come from artists such as Jackson Browne, Eric Clapton and Ray Lamontagne. He is a former band member with Rebekah Todd & The Odyssey (Rebekah performed on our livestream earlier this summer) and The Broadcast. His current project is the release of his debut solo album Quicksand, available on all streaming platforms. You can listen to William’s music here.

Without Further Ado is descriptive of a no nonsense, get-right-down-to-it, approach to music. The band is comprised of five talented individuals who share a common passion for music that has something to say – music that requires a certain attention to detail to get it right.
With an ever-expanding repertoire that ranges from Crosby, Stills & Nash to Conway Twitty, from Big Joe Turner to the Eagles, from Emmylou Harris to Patsy Cline, Without Further Ado is at home on stage, and they make their audience feel at home as well.

In honor of Veterans Day, The Clayton Center is proud to present a live video stream of “The Greatest Generation” as performed by The Jazz Ambassadors of The United States Army Field Band.
Please join us as we honor those who have served and defended our country.The Jazz Ambassadors is the official touring big band of the United States Army. Formed in 1969, this 19-member ensemble has received great acclaim at home and abroad performing America’s greatest original art form, jazz.
Concerts by the Jazz Ambassadors are programmed to entertain all types of audiences. The band’s diverse repertoire includes big band swing, bebop, Latin, contemporary jazz, standards, popular tunes, Dixieland, vocals, and patriotic selections, many of which are written or arranged by members of the Jazz Ambassadors.
The Jazz Ambassadors has appeared in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Japan, India, and throughout Europe. Recent notable performances include concerts at the Toronto Jazz Festival, the Richmond Jazz Festival at Maymont, the Kennedy Center Honors, the Jazz Education Network Conference, and an appearance on the Colbert Report.
Gordon Goodwin, Bobby Shew, Ernie Watts, and the Dave Brubeck All-Star Quintet are just a few of the outstanding jazz artists who have shared the stage with the Jazz Ambassadors. The band has been featured in joint concerts with Marvin Hamlisch and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, the Seattle Symphony Pops, the Colorado Pops Orchestra, and the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall.
The Jazz Ambassadors’ rigorous touring schedule and reputation for excellence has earned it the title “America’s Big Band.”
Onyx Club Boys is an acoustic string band (violin, guitar, upright bass and drums) rooted in Django Reinhardt’s Gypsy Jazz sounds of 1930’s Paris, and Stuff Smith’s New York City Swing. However, being from 21st Century North Carolina, their diverse influences take the music beyond borders. It’s a trip around the world, which will make you swoon, tap your feet and realize how universally similar music really is.
The band just released their newest album, Million Color Vision, in 2018. It features catchy originals along with a few classics, and was carefully crafted and recorded over the last few years.
Among the many shows, The Onyx Club Boys have appeared at Shakori Hills Festival, Festival for the Eno, Haw River Ballroom, Cat’s Cradle, Raleigh First Night, Artsplosure, the NC Museum of Art, WUNC’s Back Porch Music at American Tobacco Campus Durham, Carrboro Django Reinhardt Festival and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.
Members have played in bands such as The Squirrel Nut Zippers, The Old Ceremony, Dialli Cissokho and Kaira Ba, and the Paperhand Puppet Intervention band.
