CLAYTON, NC – As part of National Apprenticeship Week (February 10-16), the Town of Clayton is celebrating the value of hands-on training and welcoming Nash Ellis, the newest apprentice in the Electric Department.
According to Electric System Director Allen Turnage, apprenticeship programs provide individuals with real-world learning while helping communities build a skilled and reliable workforce.
“Ellis' apprenticeship is an investment in both his future and the Town’s ability to provide reliable service,” said Turnage. “His strong work ethic and growing technical knowledge make him a valuable addition to the team.”
A North Carolina native, Ellis discovered his passion for electrical work at a high school job fair where he was introduced to the industry through South River Electric Membership Corporation (EMC). With guidance from his school counselor, he pursued training at Nash Community College and strengthened his skills through an internship with the Town of Selma. This path led him to Clayton, where he is now advancing his expertise and serving the community.
"At Selma, I learned a lot about underground electrical work and got valuable field experience,” Ellis shared. “Now, I'm excited to build on that by learning overhead work and system setup. Most importantly, I’m looking forward to keeping power on for residents and being part of a team that serves the community."
Ellis’ journey from student to apprentice was made possible through the support of NC Works NextGen, a workforce development program. John Laughter, a Business Service Specialist with the organization, emphasized how apprenticeships help young professionals gain essential training while also benefiting employers.
"Nash is getting the knowledge and practice he needs to be a fully trained lineman, and at the same time, the Town of Clayton is gaining a dedicated and skilled employee,” Laughter explained. "He’s already proven himself through his training, and we’re excited to see him continue growing in this role."
By investing in apprenticeships, the Town of Clayton is strengthening its workforce and making sure the next generation of utility professionals is ready to maintain and improve essential services for residents.
